3.1i Install - "Cannot initialize Automation - Synopsys initialization failed" error appears after Service Pack 8 installation

Keywords: Automation, Synopsys, server, fpgaexp35.exe, FPGA Express, Windows, Service Pack 8, SP8

Urgency: Standard

General Description:
I just installed Service Pack 8 (SP8). Now when I run the tools, I receive the following error from Project Manager:

"Cannot initialize Automation - Synopsys initialization failed."

If FPGA Express has not been installed according to (Xilinx Solution 10301), Windows does not register it correctly.

(NOTE: For dual installations -- Foundation Aldec and ISE -- please see Resolution 2.)

The following work-around will re-install FPGA Express correctly:

1. Reboot your PC.
2. Re-install Service Pack 7 (all three files) according to (Xilinx Solution 10301). If you already downloaded "fpgaexp35.exe" for Service Pack 8, this will also work for SP7.

Links to SP7 files:

3. Reboot your PC.
4. Re-install Service Pack 8 (all three files) according to (Xilinx Solution 10301).
5. Reboot your PC.

The program icon for FPGA Express may be removed from "Accessories" under the Xilinx Program Group; you may need to recreate the icon if you use stand-alone FPGA Express.

Dual Installation - Foundation Aldec and ISE

If ISE was installed after Foundation Aldec, installing any service pack after Service Pack 4 will cause this error. To avoid this problem, please follow these steps:

1. Download Service Pack 7 from the links in this solution.
2. Install fpgaexp35.exe.
3. Install aldecsp180.exe.
4. Install 3_3_07i_pc.exe and uncheck the "FPGA Express Update" box.
5. Install Service Pack 8.
