2.2 MicroBlaze - Error: "JTAG instruction opcode for instruction: USER2 could not be found for device XC18V04..."

Keywords: MicroBlaze, XMD, Engine, debug, JTAG, USER2

Urgency: Standard

General Description:
When I run the command:

> xmd -t hw

the following error results:

"JTAG Instruction opcode for instruction : USER2 could not be found for device XC18V04. Unable to send USER2 instruction to the JTAG chain on the target board.
ERROR:iMPACT Unable to initialize JTAG Chain for device position 1"

The target board may have several JTAG devices in the BSCAN chain; the tools need to know the position of the FPGA in the BSCAN chain. The above error occurs when the position of the MicroBlaze in the BSCAN chain is not specified.

To avoid this problem, specify the position of the FPGA that is running MicroBlaze by using the "-j" option in XMD as follows:

>xmd -t hw -j 2

The "-j 2" indicates the position of the FPGA to the tools.
