8.1i XPower - How accurate is XPower?

Description

How accurate is the power estimate from XPower?

Solution

Assuming the input frequencies and internal toggle rates are identical to actual device behavior, XPower power estimates are based on data separated into the following categories. These categories are referred to as the "Data Version", and are located near the top of the power report file.

Preview

- Initial data extrapolated from related architectures and processes, or data derived from schematic and layout simulations.

- Characterization coverage is limited; however, all new features are represented.

- Continuing changes to the data might be substantial.

- This qualifier is used for device support in advance of silicon availability; as such, the accuracy is unknown.

Advanced

- Based on characterization with early engineering samples, as well as data derived from advanced schematics and layout simulations.

- The basic fabric has been characterized in silicon, and the coverage includes the majority of the resources.

- This data qualifier is used for device support when first engineering samples are shipped to customers.

Preliminary

- Based on characterized data from first production samples or mature engineering samples.

- Characterization coverage encompasses all essential silicon resources.

- This qualifier is used for device support when first production samples are shipped to customers.

Production/Final

- Data files based on characterized data from mature production samples.

- Characterization coverage encompasses all essential silicon resources.

- No further data changes are anticipated.
