V2.0 CORE Generator Ten Gigabit Ethernet MAC - Where do physical and device address originate on an MDC/MDIO extended address command produced by the MAC?

Description

Keywords: 10GEMAC, MAC, physical, device, address, MDC, MDIO

Urgency: Standard

General Description:
From where do the physical and device address originate on an MDC/MDIO extended address command produced by the MAC? Do these addresses come from the upper data bits?

Solution

Confusion may exist regarding the origination of physical and device address on an MDC/MDIO extended address command produced by the MAC because we use Clause 22 nomenclature in our port names rather than Clause 45 nomenclature.

Clause 45 PRTAD is taken from the port HOST_ADDR[9:5], (referred to as "PHY_ADDR" on page 29 of the V2.1 data sheet), and Clause 45 DEVAD is taken from the port HOST_ADDR[4:0] (referred to as "REG_ADDR").
