What is the media support for 1000BASE-X and 1000BASE-T in the Gigabit Ethernet MAC?
The GMII configuration of the Xilinx Gigabit Ethernet MAC (GMAC) can be connected to any PHY (1000BASE-T or 1000BASE-X) that has a GMII interface for 1 Gbps speeds.
The "MII" in XGMII and GMII stands for "Media Independent Interface", which means that it is independent of any PHY (copper cable, optical fiber, etc.) standard.
The 1000BASE-X PCS/PMA configuration of the GMAC is only compatible with 1000BASE-X media. The Virtex-II Pro device I/O can be connected to fiber through an additional optical module/transponder which must be provided by the customer.
