6.1i ISE - A ModelSim vlog command from ".fdo" file fails, reporting "Error: (vlog-7) Failed to open design unit file"

Description

Keywords: functional, do file, fdo, mti, vlog, spaces, glbl.v

Urgency: Standard

General Description:
If ISE is installed in a location that contains spaces in the directory name, running a functional simulation process fails, and an error similar to the following appears in the ModelSim transcript window:

"# -- Loading entity mod_vhd
# Model Technology ModelSim SE vlog 5.7d Compiler 2003.05 May 10 2003
# ** Error: (vlog-7) Failed to open design unit file "C:/Program" in read mode.
# No such file or directory. (errno = ENOENT)
# ERROR: G:/tools/modelsim/5.7d/win32/vlog failed."

Solution

To work around the error, edit the "<design name>.fdo" file and add double quotation marks to any vlog commands that contain spaces in the directory file name.

For example:

Change:
vlog C:/Program Files/Xilinx/verilog/src/glbl.v

to:
vlog "C:/Program Files/Xilinx/verilog/src/glbl.v"

This problem has been fixed in the latest 6.1i Service Pack, available at:
http://support.xilinx.com/support/techsup/sw_updates
The first service pack containing the fix is 6.1i Service Pack 1.
