6.1i COREGen - When called up from Project Navigator, COREGen reports: "ERROR: Failure to create .sym symbol file. executable asy2sym is not in $XILINX."

Keywords: Solaris, SUN, COREGen, ISE, ProjNav, asy2sym, sym, asy, edn, .xco, generate

Urgency: Standard

General Description:
When a core is created by calling up CORE Generator from ISE, COREGen issues the following error message on a Solaris system:

"##>>-- Looking in sol...
ERROR: Failure to create .sym symbol file. executable asy2sym is not in $XILINX.
ERROR: Did not generate ISE symbol file for core <test_core>."

The Core generation fails and COREGen does not create the EDN or XCO files.

This problem has been fixed in the latest 6.1i Service Pack available at:
The first service pack containing the fix is 6.1i Service Pack 3.

The ".sym" file is a symbol file for the ECS schematic capture tool. ECS is not supported on Solaris, and the call to asy2sym is an erroneous call for this platform.

Two possible work-arounds for this error are:

1. Run COREGen in standalone mode and then add the ".xco" file to the ISE project. When COREGen is run standalone, the netlist is created and no errors are reported.

2. Create a dummy script for "asy2sym". Since the ".sym" file is not needed any script named "asy2sym" that does not return an error code will satisfy the call from COREGen . A simple dummy script follows.

#!/bin/csh -f
# dummy script for asy2sym on solaris

1. Copy the above two lines to a text file.
2. Name the text file "asy2sym" and place it in the "${XILINX}/bin/sol" directory.
3. Make sure the script is executable:
-> ie. chmod +x ${XILINX}/bin/sol/asy2sym
