8.1i ISE - XST synthesis fails with "ERROR:Xst:1249 - Missing part name parameter (-p) - ERROR:Xst:425 - Undefined command: -ifmt"

Description

Keywords: Project Navigator, options, empty, properties, process

XST Synthesis fails and issues the following error message:

"Started : "Synthesize".
ERROR:Xst:1249 - Missing part name parameter (-p)
ERROR:Xst:425 - Undefined command: -ifmt
ERROR: xst failed
Process "Synthesize" failed"

Solution

This error occurs if a space character is inadvertently entered in the value field of the XST Other XST Command Line Options process property in Project Navigator.

To resolve this issue, open the XST process properties and delete any spaces from the Other XST Command Line Options field.

This issue is fixed in the latest 8.1i Service Pack, available at:
http://www.xilinx.com/xlnx/xil_sw_updates_home.jsp
The first service pack containing the fix is 8.1i Service Pack 1.

In 8.1.01i, Project Navigator will automatically strip off leading or trailing spaces from a process value. Therefore, the ".xst" file written by Project Navigator will not have this issue. However, if a user hand edits the ".xst file" and runs XST from the command line, any leading spaces before process values will need to be deleted manually.
