XST/ISim - Cannot complete (Behavioral) Check Syntax on Windows machines

I am using the ISE Design Suite tools on a Windows system. When I run Synthesis or Check Syntax with XST, the following error and warning messages occur:

"ERROR:HDLCompilers:220 - Open of library file '...' failed
Analysis of file <"..."> failed.

WARNING: ProjectRepository: Default project expansion path too long (...). Using system temp directory instead (...). "

When I run Behavioral Syntax Check with ISim, the following error occurs:
"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

How can I resolve this issue?

Windows file systems (such as NTFS) have a character count limitation of 260 characters on directory entries. This can occur even if your project path does not exceed the limit on its own because XST and ISim require expansion of a relative path into absolute paths which sometimes can lead to very long directory names.
If you are receiving this error, you can move your project to a location with a short path name and this should resolve the issue.
