SelectIO Design Assistant: IBIS Models & Simulation - IBIS Simulation Setup

Description

This article deals with Supported Simulators and the basics of Simulation Setup.

This article is part of the Design Assistant section (Xilinx Answer 50926) of the SelectIO Solution Centre (Xilinx Answer 50924).

Solution

Xilinx IBIS models are designed to comply with the IBIS ANSI/EIA-656 standard. Therefore, any IBIS simulator should be able to Xilinx IBIS models.

There are some basic steps needed to set up the IBIS simulation.

First of all a driver for the line needs to be added to the simulation and the proper model needs to be selected.

Any external termination on the board needs to be taken into account and it should be modeled in the simulation. In this case the series resistor is used to damp the strong driver selected.

The next component in the simulation should be the transmission line. This can be modeled as a simple transmission line or it can be set up to more closely mimic the behavior of the trace on the board.

For example it is possible to set the trace up as a microstrip and edit the parameters and spacing for the trace on the board.

The receiver side termination can also be modeled by the user. In this case split termination is used. It can be modeled using discrete resistors and voltage sources.

The last element needed is to select a receiver.

Once the schematic based simulation is set up you can run the simulation.

In this stage you can observe the signal as a waveform with a given duty cycle, a rising or falling edge and run and eye diagram.

The simulation should allow you to take measurements of the values at certain points on the plot.
