2013.2 Licensing - Old style license check information embedded in IP cores or IP core implementation files is not matched correctly with a valid license for the IP

Description

I have a valid IP license, however, when I attempt to generate an IP core or implement a design containing an existing IP core, the following licensing error occurs:

Vivado example error generating IP core target

# generate_target {all} [get_ips my_core]
ERROR: [IP_Flow 19-98] Generation of the IP CORE failed.
Failed to generate IP 'my_core'. One or more mandatory IP licenses were not found. Please obtain valid IP license(s) to proceed.

"generate_target {all} [get_ips my_core]"
    (file "rdi_genip.tcl" line 8)

Vivado example error linking design

ERROR: [Netlist 29-57] IP License required for netlist cell 'rs_encoder_v6_module', instantiated as 'inst_1/inst_1/my_core_inst_name'.

Solution

In Vivado 2013.2 design tools, the license validation fails for IP which use an old style licensing string. Note that the license key style change was made several years ago, but the old syle should still be valid and correctly interpreted.

This issue will be most commonly seen with third-party partner IP or existing IP cores (NGC or EDIF based) generated in previous releases.

The "@xil_ip_pkgr_test_core#xil_ip_pkgr_test_core" license string format is an old (and deprecated) format, but it is still valid and should be recognized. The error reported during generation suggests this IP failed to checkout the required "xil_ip_pkgr_test_core" feature during generation.

A tactical patch to correct this issue is attached to the end of this answer record.

  • Windows: AR56630_Vivado_2013_2_Win_preliminary_rev1.zip
  • Linux: AR56630_Vivado_2013_2_Lin_preliminary_rev1.zip

Patch installation and use instructions are contained in the readme file of the patch under Vivado/patch_readme.

Compatibility

This tactical patch is compatible with Vivado Design Suite 2013.2.
The patch will no longer be needed as of Vivado Design Suite 2013.3.
