The VC709 ships with 2 SODIMMs on board, each with 4 GB up to 1600MTs.
Can this capacity be changed?
The Virtex-7 FPGA VC709 Connectivity Kit can support two 8 GB SODIMMs. However, this configuration has not been tested.
All 16 address lines are wired to the FPGA, as well as the 2 rank selects S#0 and S#1.
The VC709 was designed to support 1600MTs:
216A[15:0]* 23BA[2:0] * 2 Ranks S#[1:0] * 8Bytes per 64bit SODIMM = (65536)*(8)*(2)*8 = 8GBytes
Note: The VC709 has ONLY been tested with 4 GB Single Rank SODIMMs, MT8KTF51264HZ-1G9. Therefore, the S#1 net is not tested during production testing.
Using Dual Rank is the only way to achieve 8 GB on a DDR3 SODIMM (Single Rank design will only get to 4 GB).
MIG currently supports Dual Rank SODIMM, but none are supported at 1866 Mbps.
Frequency support for dual rank parts is dropped down by one memory speed grade.
