Vivado - ERROR: [EDIF 20-105] Parse error on or above line #. EDIF file was not written properly by 'Vivado'

I am receiving errors similar to the following when opening an implemented design:

ERROR: [EDIF 20-105] Parse error on or above line 723456. EDIF file was not written properly by 'Vivado'

What causes this error and how can I resolve it?

This error occurs when Vivado runs out of memory.
In most cases you should see a prompt similar to the following:

"Vivado has run out of memory". A few seconds later the program dies with the following message:
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: INFO: os::commit_memory(0x000000004d853000, 12288, 0) failed; error='Cannot allocate memory' (errno=12)

The write fails because available memory is exhausted during the operation.
To resolve the issue more system memory is required.

You will need to free up more memory on the current machine or use another machine / server with more available memory.
