Vivado - IP Integrator - Issues relating to locked IP when migrating project to lastest release

Description

I have an existing design created in a previous version of the tools, and want to migrate this to the latest version.

To do this, I am using Tools -> Report IP -> Report IP Status within Vivado.

However, I am receiving errors similar to the following:

[filemgmt 20-1366] Unable to reset target(s) for the following file is locked: project_1/sources_1/bd/base_microblaze_design/base_microblaze_design.bd
    Locked reason:
    * BD design contains locked IPs. Please run report_ip_status for more details and recommendations on how to fix this issue.
    List of locked IPs:
        base_microblaze_design_xbar_0

How can I work around this issue?

Solution

To upgrade the locked sub-cores, you will need to expand the hierarchy of the block design in the Sources window in Vivado and then find out which sub-cores are locked.

Then, in the tcl console type the following command:

upgrade_bd_cells [get_bd_cells /microblaze_0_axi_periph]

Because the sub-cores by themselves cannot be upgraded, the IP core that is using this sub-core must be upgraded.

In this case the instance name of the IP core in question is microblaze_0_axi_periph.

As you can see from the following figure, that the xbar sub-core is no longer locked.
