2016.1 Vivado - Launching Vivado on a remote CentOS machine opens an X11 xterm instead

Description

I remotely log into a CentOS6 machine (using VNC), and then launch Vivado.

Instead of getting the Vivado IDE, an xterm window opens. The following warning is contained in the log:

Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
xterm: cannot load font -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1

Solution

This is caused by missing font packages related to xterm on the machine (OS related).

When start_gui is called, the X11 xterm is opened and the warning which is not related to Vivado is issued.

In reported cases, closing the opened xterm via Ctrl+C has allowed the Vivado GUI to launch.

Using X11 forwarding/ssh -X does not reproduce the issue.

To install the required fonts, you can use a command similar to the following:

yum install xorg-x11-fonts*

This issue will be resolved in Vivado 2016.2.
