2016.1 Vivado IP Flows - While upgrading an IP in Vivado I receive the message 'An unexpected error has occurred (11)'

I have an older project that I am upgrading to Vivado 2016.1.

I allow the project to be converted to the Vivado 2016.1 format, and then opt to upgrade the IP cores in the project to the current versions available in Vivado 2016.1. While the IP is updating I get an unexpected error similar to the following:

An unexpected error has occurred (11)
/Installs/Vivado/2016.1/tps/lnx64/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so [0x2ada00567b39]
/Installs/Vivado/2016.1/tps/lnx64/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so(JVM_handle_linux_signal+0xb6) [0x2ada0056df26]
/Installs/Vivado/2016.1/tps/lnx64/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so [0x2ada00564753]
/lib64/libc.so.6 [0x39f2e302d0]

The log shows the following:

INFO: [IP_Flow 19-1972] Upgraded system_axi_ethernet_0_0 from AXI 1G/2.5G Ethernet Subsystem 6.1 to AXI 1G/2.5G Ethernet Subsystem 7.0

WARNING: [IP_Flow 19-3298] Detected external port differences while upgrading 'IP system_axi_ethernet_0_0'.

This error has been found to occur when upgrading some IP cores when the upgrade goes beyond two major software versions.

For example, if the IP core was created or last upgraded in Vivado 2013.3, and you are upgrading to Vivado 2016.1.

To work around this issue, first upgrade the IP in an intermediate version of Vivado and then upgrade in Vivado 2016.1.

This issue has been fixed in Vivado 2016.2.
