LogiCORE HDMI RX 1.4/2.0 Subsystem IP v3.1 (Rev 2): Why is there no audio when AppleTV is playing a DolbyAtmos movie in LPCM format?

Description

There is no audio when an AppleTV 4K device is playing a DolbyAtmos movie in LPCM format using the HDMI IP pass-through example design.

When Dolby Atmos set to "OFF" (ie when sending 8 channels LPCM instead of Atmos), audio is either not played or is corrupted.

What is the cause of this issue?

Solution

This is a known issue in the HDMI 1.4/2.0 RX Subsystem driver version 5.3 in the 2019.1 release.

It only happens if the "clone EDID" functionality is used from the HDMI Pass-through Example Design.

  • 2019.1 - User can download the HDMI RX Subsystem driver patch (Xilinx Answer 73268) to resolve the problem.
  • 2019.2 - User can download the HDMI RX Subsystem driver patch (Xilinx Answer 73299) to resolve the problem.
  • 2020.1 - The issue is resolved in 2020.1 and later versions.
