Vivado 2014.1 : How do I migrate IP created in a prior version of Vivado into the current release of Vivado

Description

In order to help manage the designers IP, each release of Vivado only supports the most current version of IP in that release.

For this reason it is not possible to directly manage and use IP created in prior releases of Vivado without first importing that IP into the current release.

Because the simulation model is an IP output product in Vivado, the original IP cannot be directly simulated in the new version of Vivado without first importing the IP.

This document describes the process of importing IP created in an earlier release of Vivado into the current release.

To help demonstrate the process, a project using a FIFO IP created in Vivado 2013.1 will be migrated into the 2014.1 release.

Solution

General Flow:

The general process of IP conversion is shown below:

    •             Open the original version of Vivado that the IP was created in.
    •             Inspect the Output Products to ensure that the simulation products are generated.
    •             Open or create the final project in the desired version of Vivado.
    •             Import the old IP into the new Vivado project.
    •             Perform regression simulation on legacy IP to ensure that the operation worked as expected.

Original IP Output Product Generation

This section describes the process of opening the original design and ensuring that all of the output products for simulation are created.

The process is as follows:

1) Open the version of Vivado that the IP was created in.

2) Locate and Select the IP to generate output products for in the IP Sources Tab.

  • Right click the IP
  • Select "Generate Output Products" from the pop-up context menu.

3) Inspect the output products and generate any missing products as necessary.

New Vivado Project IP Importation

The section describes the process of importing IP created in a prior version of Vivado into the current project.

The process is as follows:

1) Open the latest version of Vivado (2014.1 in this example).

2) Locate and import the existing IP to import.

  1. Add Sources
  2. Add Existing IP
  3. Locate the IP to import
  4. Import the IP
