PetaLinux: How to install the required packages for the PetaLinux Build Host?

Description

How do I install the required packages for the PetaLinux Build Host?

Solution

The list of required packages for the PetaLinux Build Host can be found in the "Installation Requirements" section of (UG1144).

https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2020_1/ug1144-petalinux-tools-reference-guide.pdf

The script attached to this Answer Record will install the required packages for the PetaLinux Build Host.

The script detects whether the Host OS is a Ubuntu, RHEL, or CentOS Linux distribution and then automatically installs all of the required packages for the PetaLinux Build Host.

  • Turn on debug mode by setting debug=1 in the script. This disables actual changes on the host machine by using dry-run options in the packages manager.
  • Turn off debug mode by setting debug=0 in the script. This proceeds with the installation of packages on the host machine.

Note 1:

The script requires root privileges.

Note 2:

The script is supported for 2020.1 and later releases.

The script does not install the PetaLinux Tools.

Once the script has executed successfully, download the PetaLinux Tools installer from the link below and follow the directions in the "Installing the PetaLinux Tool" section of (UG1144).

Command to run the script:

$ sudo ./plnx-env-setup.sh
