I/O Modules and Smart Sensors

Any-to-Any Connectivity and Distributed Computing for traditional and networked I/O Modules and Sensors

Overview

Flexible connectivity is a domain of AMD Cost Optimized Portfolio, especially with the AMD Spartan 7 line-up. These devices come with the right architecture to run with high fanout at an optimized System-level cost position. Flexible I/O and programmable logic enable the acquisition and processing of high amounts of data from interfaces with virtually every type of networking protocol. Processor soft cores, in particular AMD Microblaze, are ideal to run networking stacks.

AMD adaptive SoCs and FPGAs are commonly used in traditional and networked IO modules and Smart Sensors. They interface to chip-to-chip connection or to external PHYs which drive lines over longer distances. The integrated XADC block is ideal to capture analog data. With Programmable Logic it's possible to aggregate information and forward them to an industrial controller or Gateways over backplane buses. Also, extensions for functional Safety are possible and benefit from AMD certified Design tools and the availability of reliability data.

Modern I/O modules are IoT devices and therefore networked so that it's possible to log in from remote. For that purpose, the application processors in Adaptive SoCs have an advantage. An IT/OT converged function that are optimally supported by AMD SoC characteristics, namely:

  • Heterogeneous embedded processing, I/O flexibility, hardware-based deterministic control for non-interference between IT and OT functionality
  • Connectivity over diverse Industrial Ethernet standards including support for Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN)
  • Compliance for IEC 62443 cybersecurity
  • Real-time analytics and machine learning for more autonomous and responsive systems

Some Industrial and Healthcare IoT products need all elements of the AMD IIoT and HcIoT Solutions Stack, all need some. The AMD IIoT and HcIoT Solutions Stack is comprised of optimized AMD and Ecosystem building blocks and solutions used across Industrial and Healthcare IoT platforms. Starting from scratch is never something you will have to do with a AMD-based Industrial or Healthcare IoT system. Minimize development time and cost and maximize design reuse on your next Industrial or Healthcare IoT platform by exploring the different elements of the AMD IIoT and HcIoT Solutions Stack.
