Overview

Video Processing for Ultra-Low Latency Interactive Streaming

Purpose-built for real-time, high-volume streaming, the Alveo MA35D media accelerator is enabling a new era of interactive media services, including live events, e-learning, social streaming, live shopping, sports betting, cloud gaming, and more. Supporting both next-generation AV1 standard and mainstream H.264 and H.265 codecs1, the card delivers ultra-low latency at optimal video quality (VQ) for creating immersive experiences. Infrastructure operators, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), content providers, and streaming platform vendors can leverage the Alveo MA35D media accelerator to maximize channel density, power efficiency, and bandwidth efficiency to cost-effectively scale their live streaming services.

Powered by a 5nm Video Processing Unit

Based on 5nm ASIC technology, two video processing units (VPUs) power the accelerator card, each integrating diverse IP to accelerate the entire video pipeline.

  • AV1, H.265, H.264 for up to 2X compression efficiency vs. software encoders2
  • Accelerated ABR Scaler for multiple resolutions and endpoints
  • AI Processor improves visual experience at low latency and low bitrates
  • VQ Look-Ahead Engine for optimizing VQ and compression efficiency
  • VQ QoE Engine maintains consistent QoS for end-users
  • Compositor Engine for multi-layered, immersive experiences

High-Density, Low-Latency Streaming

The Alveo MA35D media accelerator allows streaming providers to maximize the number of low-latency streams per card, per rack, and per data center–which can help reducing both CAPEX and OPEX. The card provides

  • High channel density at up to 32x 1080p60
  • Ultra-low latency at 8ms for 4K encode
  • 1 Watt per stream (1080p60)3 to help reduce power and cooling costs

Concurrent AV1, H.265, H.264

With two discrete transcoding devices per card, an Alveo MA35D accelerator  enables multiple standards concurrently, allowing service providers to support mainstream H.264 and H.265 standards while incrementally migrating to AV1 as user adoption increases1.

AI-Enabled, Intelligent Video Pipeline

Recognizing that the industry is approaching the technology limits of compression efficiency, AI is taking a pivotal role in encoders to infuse more intelligence into the video pipeline. Each device on the Alveo™ MA35D card features an AI processor to evaluate content frame by frame, dynamically adjusting encoding parameters for optimal bitrate and visual quality– and doing so at low latency and high channel density.

  1. Video codec acceleration (including at least the HEVC (H.265), H.264, VP9, and AV1 codecs) is subject to and not operable without inclusion/installation of compatible media players. GD-176
  2. Based on testing by AMD Labs in March 2023, using the VMAF scores of Alveo MA35D AV1 encode compared to the VMAF scores of  open source x264 VeryFast SW models across (13) publicly available video files at various resolutions and bitrates. Actual results may vary. ALV-006.
  3. Typical power for 8 4K streams or 32 1080p60 streams estimated at 35W, based on preliminary testing and subject to change. 40W Total Thermal Design Power (TDP)
